Boychuk, Jones, Kazandian selected for Canada Soccer's U-20 National Team
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Three Memphis women's soccer student-athletes will represent their home country at the 2020 CONCACAF Women's U-20 championship later this month as sophomore Tanya Boychuk and freshmen Mya Jones and Lara Kazandjian were named to Canada Soccer's U-20 National Team.
The 20-player squad will compete for a qualifying bid for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup this summer.
"I'm super proud of them. It's well deserved, and I think they are all ready," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I've obviously spent a little more time with Tanya and Mya, but Lara has come in this semester and has fit in so well. I'm excited for them and confident for them in this tournament."
Hosted by the Dominican Republic, the 2020 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship will begin Feb. 22 and conclude on Mar. 2. Canada, who will compete against Jamaica, Guatemala and El Salvador in group play, is schedule to play Feb. 22, 24 and 26 before the knockout stage of the tournament begins Feb. 29.
The top two teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2020 FIFA Women's World Cup in Coast Rica and Panama in August.
The Tiger trio will make their third collective stint with the team after training in a pair of camps in August and December. Boychuk and Kazandjian also competed in an international series with Canada Soccer's National Team in England in July.
"It speaks volumes to our program. Over the years we've had student-athletes who have been with their National Team, but to have three on our current roster represent their country, that's pretty special," Monaghan added. "I think it compliments where our program stands. I think the future is very bright at Memphis."
Boychuk capped her second season in Blue and Gray with second team All-Conference honors after claiming a spot on the league's All-Rookie team in 2018. She registered nine goals and three assists while serving as captain in 2019.
Jones turned in an impressive rookie campaign, yielding The American's Rookie of the Year honors. The Calgary native tallied three goals and eight assists, which rank second in Memphis single-season history by a freshman.
Kazandjian joined the program this spring semester after capping the Tigers' signing class in November. The Kirkland, Quebec native was also most recently named to Canada's provisional roster in preparation for the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship.
