Feb 16, 2020 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis baseball fell short in its weekend finale against Xavier, dropping a 9-6 decision at FedExPark on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis held a 7-6 advantage through six, but a pair of runs in the seventh and a pair of runs in the eighth claimed the Opening Weekend series for the Musketeers.
Offensively, the Tigers found multiple-hit days from Hunter Goodman, Alec Trela and Austin Baskin. Baskin also tallied his first two collegiate RBI, while Goodman, Trela and Ben Brooks each drove in a run.
The Tigers struck first for the third time in the weekend, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single from Trela scored the game's first run, and a two-RBI hit from Baskin extended the lead.
After answering in the second inning with a run, Xavier plated four runs in the third to build a 5-3 lead.
Facing the two-run deficit, the Tigers chipped away, plating a run in each of the middle three innings. An RBI hit from Brooks in the fourth started the rally, while Taylor Howell helped plate a run in the fifth to tie the contest.
Goodman gave Memphis its second lead of the day when he connected on a solo homer in the sixth inning, his second of the young season.
Despite the rally, Xavier answered late in the game to set the final.
Memphis will return to the diamond on Tuesday at Central Arkansas for its first road contest of the season. First pitch from Conway, Ark., is slated for 4 p.m.
