Tigers fall in the night contest to FGCU
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Memphis softball team picked up another split Saturday as the Tigers defeated Furman in game one by a score of 8-3 before falling to host Florida Gulf Coast by a 5-1 margin in the night cap.
Â
Memphis moves to 5-4 on the year with one game remaining at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational. The Tigers are 2-2 while competing in Florida this weekend.
Â
Game One (Memphis 8, Furman 3)
Furman strung together a pair of two-out singles and a pair of walks to quickly take a 2-0 lead through the top of the first inning. Memphis quickly responded with three in the bottom half of the first, capped by a sacrifice fly by Ryleigh Aungst.
Â
Sam Ibison ignited Memphis' offense in the first inning with her first double of the 2020 campaign. Memphis finished with three hits in the inning as Brady Rowland and Baylee Smith recorded a pair of two-out hits.
Â
Just as Furman tied up the contest in the top of the fourth inning, Memphis had an answer. The Tigers tallied four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, including Ibison's second hit of the contest. Ibison registered a single through the right side to score two runners in Kendall Lee and Hannah Bassham.
Â
Memphis added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before a quick 1-2-3 inning on defense ended the contest.
Â
Rowland and Smith led Memphis offensively with three hits each. Four total Memphis hitters recorded multiple hits in the contest. Freshman pitcher Chyanne Ellett recorded her fourth victory of the season with 3.1 innings in relief. Memphis' pitching corps registered 15 strikeouts against Furman, led by Karli Perque's seven.
Â
Game Two (FGCU 5, Memphis 1)
Game two of the day was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings before the bats came alive for Florida Gulf Coast in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Â
Both teams were held to just one hit through four innings. Ibison was the owner of Memphis' lone hit in the time span, leading the fourth inning off with a single to left field.
Â
FGCU registered four hits in the fifth and capitalized on a Memphis error to take a 3-0 lead against the visiting Tigers. Ellett came in relief of Mariah Nichols, who pitched 4.2 innings for the Tigers with five strikeouts.
Â
The Eagles tacked on two more in the sixth inning. Memphis didn't go down easy as the Tigers put together a pair of hits by Gracie Morton and Davidson and a drawn walk by Aungst to score their first run of the contest. One run proved to be all the damage Memphis could do as the Eagles recorded a strikeout to end the game.
