Memphis set for regular-season finale against Houston at Liberty Bowl
Dec 10, 2020 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis football will conclude its regular season Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Houston on ESPNU in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers (6-3, 4-3 American Athletic Conference) have won the last four matchups with the Cougars (3-3, 3-2) and are 13-15 in the overall series.
Another rested opponent
For the sixth time this season and fifth time in AAC play, Memphis will face an opponent that had at least one week off entering the game.
Houston has not played since defeating USF 56-21 on Nov. 14 and has not played a road game since Nov. 7 at Cincinnati.
"This is a very talented team and another team that's coming off having an extra week to prepare for us," said Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield. "Who knows what we're going to get. We are watching film that's almost a month old now."
Perfect at home
With a win Saturday, Memphis will finish a second consecutive season undefeated at home for the first time in program history.
The Tigers' 34-33 win over USF on Nov. 7 set a new school record with 13 consecutive home victories. Memphis has since added a home win over Stephen F. Austin and can extend its streak to 15 wins heading into next season. The current 14-game home winning streak ranks No. 5 nationally.
"We have a special group of people on this team that want to take care of business this week and make sure we finish this thing off right," said senior quarterback Brady White, who is 18-1 in his career at the Liberty Bowl.
Record watch
White enters Saturday on the cusp of setting yet another Memphis record. The three-year starter has 10,160 career passing yards and just needs just 56 against Houston to move past Danny Wimprine (2001-04) for the most in school history.
The Santa Clarita, Calif., native already owns the program record for career passing touchdowns (85) and wins as a starting quarterback (26).
