Tigers Back at Liberty Bowl for Key Conference Game Against UCF
Oct 13, 2020 | Football
MEMPHIS — Memphis football returns to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Saturday for an American Athletic Conference clash with UCF.
Presented by FedEx, the game is set to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CT and will be nationally televised on ABC. Memphis (1-1, 0-1 The American) and UCF (2-1, 1-1) have combined to win the past three American Athletic Conference championships.Â
"We're excited about a great opponent coming to the Liberty Bowl," said Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield. "It's an opportunity to play on national television, and the rest of the country is going to watch you and be able to see how well you prepared."
The contest will mark the Tigers' first home game in six weeks. The team took a trip to the Liberty Bowl last Saturday during a bye week to re-familiarize with the home field. For some players, it was the first trip to the stadium since training camp in August.
Memphis, which has won its last 10 games at the Liberty Bowl, was victorious in its home opener 37-24 over Arkansas State on Sept. 5. The Tigers were scheduled to host Houston on Sept. 18, but that game was postponed to Dec. 5Â due to positive COVID-19 cases.Â
Following the latest guidance from the Shelby County Health Department, Memphis Athletics recently announced the loosening of capacity restrictions for the game. The change moves social distancing between seating groups from 12 feet to 6 feet, resulting in an increased Liberty Bowl seating capacity from 4,500 to an estimated 10,000.
"Our guys are excited to know there will be more people out there," Silverfield said. "We have wonderful fans. Allowing more of them to be able to watch us from the stands is what makes us happy because we know some people spend a paycheck on season tickets and it means so much to them. We know they'll be loud and create an advantage for us."
UCF has won 13 consecutive games in the series. The last Memphis win came in 1990, the first game between the two teams. Two of the past three meetings have been in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game.
"I think a lot of us do have a chip on our shoulder when it comes to UCF because of what's occurred with them in the past," Silverfield said. "It's going to be a battle. I don't care if we win the game 3-2, just as long as we come out with a win."
