Memphis returns home to play talented Mustangs' team
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Another game, another challenge for the University of Memphis men's basketball team.
The Tigers, coming off an 80-40 American Athletic Conference loss at Tulsa, will play host to SMU at 3 p.m. Saturday at FedExForum.
SMU is 14-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Mustangs have won six of their past eight behind the stellar play of point guard Kendric Davis. Davis, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Houston, Texas, is averaging a league-leading 7.4 assists per game, in addition to leading the Mustangs in scoring at 15.9 points per game.
Davis, a transfer who started two games at TCU last season, scored a career-high 24 points earlier this month in an overtime win at Vanderbilt. He has had five games with nine or more assists this season, including 10 against Abilene Christian.
SMU also boasts two players – 6-foot-8 sophomore Feron Hunt and 6-foot-8 junior Isiaha Mike – who average more than seven rebounds per game. Hunt leads the team with a 7.5 average.
The Tigers will attempt to get back on the same track that had them winning 10 of 12 before Wednesday's game at Tulsa. Memphis is 14-4 overall and 3-2 in the AAC.
The UofM has been led by freshman forward Precious Achiuwa, who was held to 10 points and eight rebounds at Tulsa. Achiuwa had a streak of six straight double-doubles (an AAC record) snapped.
The Tigers remain one of the conference's top defensive teams. The UofM ranks first in field goal percentage defense (35.7) and No. 3 in scoring defense (63.4). The Tigers' field goal percentage defense also ranks first nationally.
Tulsa became the first team this season to shoot 50 percent or better against the Tigers. The Golden Hurricane made 27-of-54 field goals.
Relying on its strong defense could prove beneficial for Memphis. The Mustangs lead the league in scoring (76.7 points per game) and are ranked first in field goal percentage (46.7).
