2019 Tiger Football Camp: Practice 8 and Fan Fest
Aug 10, 2019 | Football
Over 1800 Tiger fans attended Saturday's over two-hour open practice and scrimmage.
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Over 1800 Memphis Tiger football fans descended on Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium Saturday to watch the first scrimmage and open practice of the 2019 season. The over two-hour practice featured work on all three phases of the game, including extensive full-contact scrimmage work.
"We got to work a lot of different situations, I think we got to work about 130 plays today," Head Coach Mike Norvell said. "I really liked what I saw from our defense, guys were really flying around with a lot of confidence. We've had a back-and-forth camp up to this point and I thought the defense came out and got the best of the offense today."
The morning began with meetings, a walk-through and breakfast before a visit from the American Athletic Conference officials, who described the rule changes and points of emphasis for 2019. After lunch and a quick briefing, the team loaded up to head to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for the first time in fall camp.
"I thought all-in-all it was a good day," Norvell said. "A lot of young guys got a chance to play in the Liberty Bowl for the first time and I'm definitely excited about this group we have."
"The offense was slow early. But they had a couple of series where they were able to put some things together. They moved the ball, just some critical situations where they kind of stalled out, but that's kind of what it looks like there early in fall camp."
Norvell's defensive kudos to media in post-practice included a number of Tiger newcomers, but the multiple reps for the youngsters was by design.
"We held some guys back today in order to get a look at some of our younger guys," Norvell said. "It's all about evaluating these young guys eight days into camp. Who can we count on when August 31 rolls around.
We're very multiple in what we do on defense, but that's something we take pride in. (Coach Fuller) is a great teacher, a fundamental technician, and I really like the edge our defense is taking on. We've got as much depth as we've ever had and it starts with the defensive front. Those guys (young guys) have to play at a high level."
Tiger fans who missed the free look at the team have one more chance remaining, although they'll have to drive out of town for it. Memphis leaves Wednesday after practice for training camp at the UofM Lambuth Campus now that summer classes are done. That training camp closes with a 10 a.m. Saturday scrimmage in Jackson.
"We've very appreciative of Tiger nation for coming out for Fan Fest," Norvell said. "There's definitely a lot of excitement around the program now. We're looking forward to seeing everyone again, whether it's at Jackson next Saturday, or at the Liberty Bowl August 31."
The Lambuth scrimmage is also free and kicks at 10 a.m.
