MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the third straight season, the Memphis baseball team has been recognized by the ABCA as a Team Academic Excellence Award recipient.
The award recognizes college baseball programs that earn at least a 3.0 team GPA on a 4.0 scale. The Tigers, who finished the 2018-19 academic year with a 3.28 GPA, join American Athletic Conference members Cincinnati, ECU, Tulane and Wichita State in earning the annual honor.
This week's ABCA award announcement caps a successful season in the classroom for the Tigers. Individually, junior Alec Trela earned Google Cloud Academic All-America honors. Along with Trela, seniors Cale Hennemann and Kyle Ouellette earned First Team Google Cloud Academic All-District recognition.
Additionally, 24 baseball student-athletes were named to the AAC All-Academic Team earlier this month, the second-most in the UofM athletic department behind football (30).
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Ethics in Coaching Award.
