Wyatts Selected For 2019 Pan Am Championships

Brothers to represent Canada at the event in July.
OTTAWA, Ontario – University of Memphis track and field/cross country's Tate and Zachary Wyatt have been selected to represent Canada at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships, Athletics Canada announced Friday. The Wyatt brothers are returning for their sophomore campaigns at Memphis in the fall.

The 2019 Pan American U20 Championships are set for July 19-21 in San José, Costa Rica. The Pan American Championships, a biennial track and field competition, is celebrating its 20thanniversary in 2019.

Tate and Zachary Wyatt both are running in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at the Championships. The Langley, British Columbia, natives are scheduled to race in the event on July 20 at 7:15 p.m. (CT).

The Wyatt twins completed their first collegiate year at Memphis in 2018-19, competing in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Kevin Robinson is the Tigers program's head coach.

Tate set his personal-best in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:07.59 at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships. He scored points for the Tigers with a sixth-place finish in the event. At the league's indoor championships in late February, Tate ran a leg on the gold medal-winning men's distance medley relay. It was Tate's first All-American Athletic Conference honor.

In the 2018 cross country season, Tate posted two top-30 performances and placed 39thin the American Athletic Conference Championships.

Zachary ran the men's 3000-meter steeplechase (9:48.01) once in the 2019 outdoor campaign, placing second in the event at the Memphis Tiger Invitational. In the indoor season, Zachary brought home two medals from the American Athletic Conference Championships in late February. He placed third (bronze) in the men's mile and joined his brother, Tate,on the gold medal-winning men's distance medley relay.

Zachary had three top-30 finishes in the 2018 cross country campaign. He finished 35that the American Athletic Conference Championships.

The Wyatts join Ashley Pryke in representing Canada and Memphis on the international stage this summer. Pryke, who wrapped up her collegiate career at the NCAA Outdoor Championships a week ago, was selected to compete in the World University Games in Italy in July.

The Tigers have a current connection to the Pan American Championships. Memphis assistant coach Ken Frenette, who directly oversees the team's distance group, ran in the marathon at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. Frenette entered the Games ranked last in the event and crossed the finish line in sixth place.
