MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the first time in program history, Memphis women's soccer will be represented on one of the sport's largest stages as 2018 alumna Chanel Hudson-Marks was selected to the Jamaica Senior Women's National Team.
The daughter of Jamaican-born parents, Hudson-Marks will compete in this summer's 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup hosted by France. Jamaica became the first Caribbean country to ever qualify for the Women's World Cup last fall.
"I can't say how proud I am of Chanel. To see her grow over the years and have such a special senior year, which now turns into an opportunity to play in the World Cup, I couldn't be any prouder of her and her accomplishments," Memphis women's soccer head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It's not only a great honor for her but also for this university to have a former player represent her country on the highest stage."
The Pickering, Ontario native served as a lock-down defender for the Tigers after switching positions to start the 2018 campaign. She played in all 21 matches in her final season in Blue and Gray, including starts in the last 17 contests. Hudson-Marks was named the American Athletic Conference's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the 2018 AAC Tournament to help lead Memphis to its first American Athletic Conference championship last season.
The Senior Reggae Girlz will travel to the United Kingdom on Friday for an international friendly against Scotland. Following the exhibition, the team will depart for France in preparation for the June 7-July 7 tournament. Jamaica drew Australia, Brazil and Italy in Group C of the World Cup.
Jamaica, whose first World Cup match will be against Brazil on June 9, defeated Chile twice and drew against South Africa before defeating Panama in previous international friendlies this spring. Hudson-Marks participated in all three National Team camps this spring and competed in each exhibition.
