GREENVILLE, N.C. – An early deficit was too much to overcome as Memphis baseball dropped its series opener by a final of 19-10 at No. 6 ECU Thursday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Early offense helped the host Pirates to a 17-0 advantage through five innings. Despite falling behind quickly, Memphis built momentum by plating 10 unanswered runs in the latter stages of the contest before ECU plated two more to set the final.

The Tigers couldn't capitalize on opportunities offensively in the first few frames, as Memphis left nine runners on base and six in scoring position through six innings.

Ben Brooks and Payton Marshall each recorded three hits. Brooks drove in two runs while Marshall posted four RBI.

Jason Santana and Cale Hennemann also enjoyed multi-hit nights, while Hennemann recorded three runs batted in.

After ECU built the 17-0 advantage, the Tigers scratched across a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles from Marshall and Hennemann plated the Tigers' first run. Brooks then connected on his second hit of the day to plate Hennemann.

The Tigers continued the offensive surge with six runs in the top of the seventh. Three walks preceded a bases-clearing triple from Marshall. Hennemann singled to drive in the Tigers' sixth run of the game, and an RBI double from Brooks followed by a sacrifice fly drew the Tigers closer.

Memphis posted two more runs in the eighth after an RBI single by Marshall and sacrifice fly by Hennemann.

The Tigers will return to the diamond Friday at 5:30 p.m. for Game 2 of the weekend series.
