Honoring the memory of W.S. 'Babe' Howard and his work with the game of baseball throughout the region, the Tigers are set for their sixth annual memorial game.
"Babe was a tremendous ambassador for youth baseball, and a lot of guys who have gone through this program played on Babe's Millington Telephone American Legion Baseball team," Head Coach Daron Schoenrock said. "We want to honor the facility and honor the memory of Babe and what he has done for baseball locally. Laura Ray and Ray Rosas (daughter and son-in-law of the late Babe Howard) have been great ambassadors for our program. We want to keep the history and memory of that facility going."
The Tigers return to the diamond after capping its home series slate against Cincinnati at FedExPark last weekend. Despite dropping two of three contests, Memphis secured a spot in the American Athletic Conference Championships later this month in Clearwater, Fla.
Payton Marshall paced the Memphis offense last week, hitting .400 through five games. The senior also added a double and three RBI. Classmate Cale Hennemann also enjoyed a strong week at the dish, leading the team with six runs driven in and posted a pair of multi-hit games.
Redshirt sophomore righthanded pitcher Landon Kelly is projected to start for the Tigers on Tuesday. The Southaven, Miss., native holds a 6.08 ERA in 18 appearances and three starts. Kelly has tallied 37 strikeouts on the season in 40 innings pitched.
UT Martin enters the week having dropped two of three in a league series at Murray State. Offensively, the Skyhawks are led by Jordan Stoner and Casey Hartford. Stoner paces the offense with a team-best .335 average. Hartford holds a .322 mark at the plate and is tied for the team lead in RBI with 38.
On the mound, the Skyhawks are projected to counter with righthanded pitcher Seth Petry. The freshman has recorded a 5.46 ERA in 11 appearances with seven previous starts.
The Tigers are 4-1 in the previous five W.S. Babe Howard Classic games, including a 10-0 victory against the Skyhawks last season. Memphis holds a 34-6 ledger all-time against UT Martin and has claimed a win in the previous eight matchups.
