Sandwell, Gordon set school records in conference meet action.
WICHITA, Kan. – University of Memphis' Tanalya Gordon and Julian Sanchez-Pinto raised the Tigers' medal count to five with second-place performances in their respective events during Saturday action at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships.

After the second day, the Memphis women are in third place with 45 points. The Tigers men are fourth with 21 points.

Gordon and Sanchez-Pinto brought home silvers with second-place finishes in the women's long jump and men's 3000-meter steeplechase, respectively. Gordon was second with a leap of 20-7.25 (6.28m), and Sanchez-Pinto crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 8:59.23.

Gordon's jump broke her school record of 20-3 (6.17m), which she set two weeks ago at the Memphis Invitational. That 20-3 mark (6.17m) actually tied the school record with Tyranda Mosby, who had held the mark by herself since 1996.

Gordon and Sanchez-Pinto join Ashley Pryke (gold/women's javelin), Mona Jaidi (silver/women's javelin) and DeeNia McMiller (bronze/women's hammer) as Memphis' medal winners.

- Four Tigers advanced to Sunday's finals in their respective events, and they include Davon DeMoss (men's 200m), Matthew Viveiros (men's 1500m), Zachary Wyatt (men's 1500m) and Paris Perkins (women's 400m).
- In addition to Tanalya Gordon and Julian Sanchez-Pinto, four Tigers scored points Saturday, and they were Tate Wyatt (6th/men's 3000m steeplechase), Olushola Olojo (6th/men's long jump), Paige Sandwell (6th/women's 3000m steeplechase) and DeeNia McMiller (6th/women's shot put).
- Davon DeMoss advanced to his second event final, as he qualified for Sunday's men's 100 meters final on Friday.
- Paige Sandwell improved her school record in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:28.77. She set her previous record of 10:30.84 at Auburn's War Eagle Invitational in mid-April. Since her personal-best of 10:44.13 at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships, Sandwell has shaved 15 seconds off her time in 2019.
- Tate Wyatt eclipsed his personal-best by two seconds in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. He placed sixth and scored points in his first career event at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
- Zachary Wyatt improved his personal-best by four seconds in the men's 1500 meters.
