Tigers fall to Jaguars in series opener

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – An early advantage wasn't enough as Memphis dropped its series opener against Southern Friday night at FedExPark.
Southern (17-13) struck for five runs in the ninth inning to claim a 6-1 win.
The setback spoiled a big day at the plate for Kyle Ouellette. The Tiger senior turned in a 3-for-3 performance.
On the mound, Hunter Smith's quality start was negated. The senior scattered five hits across five scoreless innings and struck out five.
Ouellette began the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning. The round-tripper marked his second homer of the season and fifth of his career.
The Jaguars were kept at bay throughout the contest until evening the game in the eighth inning after a miscue and stolen base.
In the ninth, the Jaguars took advantage of a single and an error with the bases loaded to open a 5-1 lead before setting the 6-1 final later in the frame.
Memphis will return to the diamond Saturday for a twin bill to close the series. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. with Game 2 to follow approximately 45 minutes after Game 1.
