Senior earns second career weekly honor from the American.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior women's golfer Michaela Fletcher was named the American Athletic Conference's women's golfer of the week, Wednesday. Fletcher grabbed her second career individual medalist honor in Memphis' final regular season event, The Memphis Intercollegiate, Tuesday afternoon with a school-record low score of 205.
Heading into the final round of play, Fletcher was two strokes off the lead, but used a 4-under front nine to take the lead on the final day. She built her lead to two strokes before finding trees and water on her 16th hole, but managed to bogey the hole, helping keep her in a tie atop the leaderboard.
On 18, Fletcher parred the final hole while her opponent bogeyed, securing the title for Fletcher in her final home event. Fletcher's final round 66 was a career-low round. That 66 marked just the third time in program history since 1993 that a Lady Tiger has carded a round of 66. Ashley Kees (FIU Pat Bradley Invitational, 2014-15; Valerie Luehrs (Lady Tar Heel Golf Tournament (1997-98) have the only other two 66's in that time frame. Fletcher's -5 final score was also the third-lowest round versus par in program history.
This is the second career weekly honor for Fletcher from the American. She was also named the league's player of the week on Feb. 15, 2015. A two-time, all-conference honoree, Fletcher has also qualified for two NCAA Regional events and as a freshman, became the first player in school history to advance to the NCAA Finals from the regionals.
Memphis will next be in action at the American Athletic Conference Championships in Palm Coast, Florida, April 14-16. The 2019 championships will be hosted at the Conservatory Course of the Hammock Beach Golf Course.
