Memphis looks to bounce back after dropping both games of a doubleheader to Houston over the weekend. After losing a game due to weather, the series was condensed to just a pair of games on Saturday. Though the Tigers would strike first in each of the games, Memphis struggled to keep up with the offense of the Cougars.
Ashley Threatt and Baylee Smith both crushed home runs over the weekend, pulling ahead as team leaders in the home run category. The duo now has seven homers each this season, bringing the team total to 32 moon shots. The 32 total home runs are the fifth-most in program history.
Offensively, Memphis is led by Baylee Smith, who tops the roster in four categories. Her batting average (.371), runs scored (34), total hits (49) and home runs (7) all rank first on the team this season. She also ranks second in doubles (10), triples (3) and stolen bases (12). Smith's weekend also placed her in the top-10 in career doubles (20) and RBI (66). The Henderson, Tennessee native is also closing in on top-10 spots in career hits, stolen bases and home runs.
Like last season, freshmen are making big impacts for the Tigers this season. Ryleigh Aungst and Gracie Morton rank third and fourth, respectively, in batting average. The two freshmen have combined for 40 hits, 18 doubles and eight home runs.
In the circle, the Tigers pitching staff has a combined 196 strikeouts, carrying a 4.17 ERA. Mariah Nichols leads the way with 86 strikeouts while holding opponent batters to a .241 batting average.
A Look At The Competition
UT Martin hosts the Tigers after splitting a doubleheader with SIUE on Saturday. After dropping the first game 4-1, the Skyhawks responded with an 8-6 victory, snapping a six-game losing streak. Alli Fulcher hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, capping a five-RBI effort in game two for Fulcher.
Paige Clark leads the way for the Skyhawks, hitting .412 while also swiping 27 bases on the year. As a team, UT Martin has stolen 105 bases in 125 attempts. Four players have registered at least 13 swipes on the base paths.
The Skyhawks pitching staff features a quartet of pitchers, who combine for 162 strikeouts on the season. Erin Gallagher tops the roster with 66 strikeouts, as well as allowing a team-low 31 earned runs.
In the all-time series between Memphis and UT Martin, the Tigers hold a 13-5 advantage. Memphis has won the last five outings, including a 5-2 win in the Blues City Classic earlier this season.
