McMiller, Sandwell Set School Records Friday

Tigers continue action at War Eagle Invite Saturday.
AUBURN, Ala. – University of Memphis' DeeNia McMiller and Paige Sandwell set school records in their respective events to pace the Tigers' effort in first-day action at Auburn's War Eagle Invitational Friday. The meet continues Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. (CT) start for field events, followed by the running events at 12 p.m. (CT).

McMiller set the school record in the women's hammer, and Sandwell in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase.

McMiller, a Kansas City, Mo., native, set the hammer school record with a throw of 204-9 (62.41m), surpassing the previous mark of 200-3 (61.03m) set by teammate Amber Simpson three weeks ago. In fact, the hammer school record has been reset four times in 2019 by Simpson (three times) and McMiller (once).

Sandwell, an Aurora, Ontario, native, broke a 12-year-old school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase by nearly 13 seconds with a time of 10:30.84. The previous record was 10:43.55 by Emily Malinowski in 2007.

- Memphis posted seven top-three performances Friday.
- Julian Sanchez-Pinto won his seventh career title in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase.
- In setting the school record in the women's hammer, DeeNia McMiller also shattered her previous personal-best in the event by nearly 14 feet. McMiller's previous-best was 191-0 (58.22m) at last week's Crimson Tide Invitational.
- Paige Sandwell also shattered her previous-best in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. Her previous-best time was 10:44.13 at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships.
- For McMiller, she placed third in the women's hammer Friday for her fourth career top-three performance in the event.
- Sandwell placed second in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase for her fourth top-two finish of her career in the event.
- Three Tigers on the men's side set personal-bests, and they were Payton Gleason (5000m), Adar Sheere (hammer) and Tate Wyatt (3000m steeplechase).
- Adar Sheere's personal-best surpassed his previous mark by nearly four feet, while Payton Gleason shaved eight seconds off his previous-best time in the 5000 meters.
- Sandra Ekblom leaped a personal-best 40-2.75 (12.26m) in the women's triple jump, out-distancing her previous-best mark by 2.25 inches. She placed third in the event for her second career top-three performance in the triple jump.
- Saida Burns-Moore posted her sixth top-two finish in the women's triple jump in her career at Memphis.
- For a second-straight week, Vigdis Jonsdottir set a season-best in the women's hammer.
- Olushola Olojo, who placed fourth in the triple jump in the 2017 and 2018 conference championships, made an appearance for the first time this outdoor season Friday. He competed in the men's triple jump.
