Teams heads to Florida for American Championships.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's golf team will wing its way to Florida to compete in the 2019 American Athletic Conference championships Sunday through Tuesday at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. The conference championships will be held on the club's Conservatory Course.
After a Saturday practice round, the 10 conference teams will go off tee one in tee times, Sunday. Playing twosomes, Memphis will be paired with golfers from USF for the opening round, beginning at 9:20 am (ET). Second and third round tee times will begin at 8 am (ET) on Monday and Tuesday.
Memphis is sending its trio of seniors to the championship, accompanied by freshmen Ana Dawson and Victoria Gallegos. All three seniors have posted at least one top 15 finish at the league championships.
Michaela Fletcher finished tied for 14that last year's championships with a 224 (76-75-73). An all-conference honoree, Fletcher also has one top five finish to her credit at the American Championships, finishing fifth at this event as a freshman in 2015 with a 215.
Fellow senior Sydney Colwill posted a top 10 finish at last year's event, finishing tied for ninth at 221 (76-74-71). That was her best career finish at the conference event and should give her some momentum coming in to this year's event, especially coming off a ninth-place finish in Memphis' last event, the Memphis Intercollegiate.
Madison Thomas also has a top 15 finish in her history at the championships. As a freshman in 2016, she finished with a 226 (76-76-74) for a tie for 11th. Thomas opened this season with a top 10 finish at the Payne Stewart Memorial and is looking to end the regular season schedule with a second top 10 finish.
Dawson and Gallegos will be making their first-ever conference tournament appearances, but the duo has plenty of tournament experience this season. Gallegos has been on the roster in each of the last three tournaments, while Dawson has been on the team entry for all but three events.
Houston is the top seed for the 2019 championships as the No. 23 ranked team in the latest GolfStat Rankings. The Cougars are followed by UCF (No. 51), ECU (No. 55), SMU (No. 61) and Memphis (No. 65). USF (No. 84), Tulsa (No. 86) and Tulane (No. 97) are the other teams ranked in the top 100 in the American heading into the championships.
