MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Levi Clark, a junior on the University of Memphis rifle team, makes his first international trip as a Tiger in a little over a week when he travels to Beijing, China, to shoot in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup. The competition runs Apr. 21-29.
The ISSF World Cup is the first of two overseas trips for Clark in 2019. Last week, Clark was selected as a member of the United States squad for the 2019 World University Games, which are scheduled for Naples, Italy, July 3-14. The Shooting Sport portion of the Games is set for July 4-9.
"Levi has found some great success since the start of the new year, including his qualification for NCAA Championships and All-American honors; selection to the World University Games in Italy; and now a selection to the ISSF World Cup in Beijing with Team USA," said Memphis second-year head coach Dan Hermsmeier. "He has been working hard in the range since the end of the collegiate season in March, and his hard work has been evident in his results.
"We are proud to have him represent Memphis on some of the biggest international stages in shooting, and he will gain valuable experience at these events that will carry over to his senior season."
Clark is the first shooter in Tigers rifle program history to be selected for the ISSF World Cup. Clark also is the first Memphis shooter chosen for the World University Games.
The ISSF World Cup competition continues an incredible 2018-19 for Clark. After his sixth-place finish in smallbore at the NCAA Championships in early March, Clark was named a National Rifle Association (NRA) All-America second team pick. At the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships in late February, Clark received All-GARC honorable mention recognition in both disciplines (smallbore, air rifle) and aggregate.
Clark, a Clackamas, Ore., native, led the Tigers in smallbore with a 581.4 average and shot a career-high 588 at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier. He recorded 1170 aggregates or higher four times in 2018-19, including a career-best 1179 in a home win over Nebraska Feb. 3. Clark finished the campaign with a 1169.1 aggregate average.
Clark helped lead Memphis to one of its best seasons under second-year head coach Dan Hermsmeier. The Tigers set team school records in smallbore (2332) and aggregate (4689) in winning Jacksonville State's Gamecock Invitational in late November. Memphis also posted its highest team aggregate at the GARC Championships since 2012.
