Memphis reaches the quarterfinals after completing the largest comeback in AAC Championship history, overcoming the 19-point deficit using a 28-12 fourth quarter. Gazmyne Herndon led the way with 15 points and Jamirah Shutes added 12. The story of the night, however, came from the combined five second-half three-pointers from Jada Stinson and Ashia Jones that flipped the script.
The Tigers are led by All-Freshman Team member Shutes, who averages 13.7 points per game. She tied a career-high with eight rebounds against Temple and set up shop at the free throw line in the first half to give the Tigers some life on offense.
Alana Davis pulled down 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards, on Friday against Temple. The sophomore forward leads the team with 7.8 rebounds per game and was the top offensive rebounder in the league during the regular season.
The spark for the Memphis offense against Temple was the amount of three-pointers that fell in the second half. After hitting zero in the first half, Jones and Stinson connected on five triples in the second half. Stinson has hit nine total three-pointers in the month of March, including eight in the two games against Temple. Jones, who entered the season with only one attempt in her career, has hit three in March.
Memphis' win over Temple was the first AAC Championship win since 2015, when the Tigers beat SMU in the first round. The Tigers opponent, Cincinnati, won both meetings of the teams during the regular season.
Scouting the Bearcats
Cincinnati will play its first game of the AAC Championship, having earned a first-round bye as the 3-seed. The most recent game for the Bearcats was on Monday, when Cincinnati defeated Tulane in New Orleans by a score of 80-65.
IImar'I Thomas, Cincinnati's first-team all-conference selection, leads the way for the team, scoring 13.3 points and grabbing 7.2 rebounds per game. Antoinette Miller, who was named to the league's second team, scores 12.8 points per contest.
As a team, Cincinnati scores 67.3 points per game, the third-highest average in the conference. The Bearcats outscore opponents by an average of seven points per game. Cincinnati forces opponents into 17 turnovers each contest, turning that into 15.1 points off of turnovers each game.
