Women's Basketball Set To Face Temple at AAC Championship

Tigers take on Temple for first time in postseason history; tip-off at 7 p.m. CT Friday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It's off to Uncasville, Connecticut, for the University of Memphis women's basketball team, as the Tigers enter postseason play on Friday. As the No. 11 seed, Memphis is set to take on Temple in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championship at 7 p.m. CT at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Tigers face Temple after facing off against Owls on Monday. After celebrating the senior class, Memphis hung around for the first half before eventually succumbing to the Owls. Jada Stinson had a game to remember, hitting a career-high five three-pointers on her way to scoring a career-high 17 points to lead the Tigers. Four of those three-pointers fell during the second quarter of action.

Freshman Jamirah Shutes is the team's leading scorer, netting 13.8 points per contest. The Brownsville, Tennessee native has been the high-scorer on the team 14 times, scoring in double-figures 20 times. Shutes ranks seventh on The American scoring leaderboard, first among freshmen. She also holds the 13th-highest free throw percentage in the conference, connecting on 69 percent of her trips to the charity stripe.

Alana Davis ranks second on the team in scoring and 14th in the conference, scoring 12.1 points per contest. Davis leads Memphis in rebounding with 7.7 boards per game, an average that stands fifth in the AAC. She has led the Tigers on the glass in 15 games this season, and has 11 games of 10 or more rebounds this season. Â

As a member of the American Athletic Conference, Memphis is seeking its first tournament victory since the 71-59 win over SMU during the 2015 Championship. The Tigers have never faced the Owls in the conference tournament.
Scouting the Owls
Temple will face Memphis for the second-straight game, having beaten the Tigers at home on Monday night. Mia Davis and Marissa Mackins both scored over 20 points in the contest, Davis scoring 27 and Mackins netting 23.
On the year, Davis leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Alliya Butts also scores double-figures for the Owls, adding 15.3 points per outing. Davis and Butts are the second and fifth highest scorers in the conference, respectively.

Temple has reached the semifinals of the AAC Championship twice, doing so in 2016 and 2017. The Owls have made it to the quarterfinals in each year of the Tournament.
