Tigers senior scores 58 points in two games to continue record run
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis senior guard Jeremiah Martin, in the midst of one of the greatest scoring runs in school history, was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll Monday for his performances against Temple and Cincinnati.
Â
Martin averaged 29 points in the two games – an 81-73 win over Temple at FedExForum Feb. 26 and a 71-69 loss at Cincinnati March 2 – and was 20-of-35 shooting. It marked the fifth straight week he has been recognized by the league either as Player of the Week (Feb. 25) or as part of the Weekly Honor Roll (Feb. 4, 11, 18).
Â
Martin capped a spectacular – and record-setting – February by leading the Tigers with 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting against Temple. He also had five assists and only one turnover.
Â
Against Cincinnati, Martin scored 14 of his game-high 28 points in the final 6:13. His layup with six seconds left trimmed the Bearcats' lead to one point, 70-69.
Â
Martin continued what is believed to be the best nine-game scoring stretch by an individual player in UofM history. Since the start of February, Martin has had games of 43, 41, 37, 31 and 30 points.
Â
His 43-point game against Tulane Feb. 20 set a conference single-game record and a FedExForum record for a college player.
Â
With his 28-point effort at Cincinnati, he moved into 11th place on the school's career scoring chart ahead of Kelly Wise (1999-2002). Martin has 1,507 career points and needs 38 points to move into the top 10. Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 1,545 points in his career (2006-08).
Â
The Tigers will honor Martin and the team's four other seniors – Raynere Thornton, Kyvon Davenport, Kareem Brewton Jr. and Mike Parks Jr. at Saturday's regular-season finale against Tulsa at FedExForum. Senior Day festivities begin at 8:15 p.m. Tipoff is 8:30 p.m.
