Simpson Sets School Record For Third-Straight Week

Three distance runners post personal-bests Friday.
CAPE GIRARDEAU and ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Make it three-for-three for University of Memphis track and field freshman Amber Simpson.

In the third collegiate meet of her career, Simpson reset her school record in the women's hammer with a throw of 200-3 (61.03m) to pace Friday's action for the Tigers at the 2019 Joey Haines Invitational. Simpson's mark Friday out-distanced her previous record by over two feet (197-11; 60.33m), which she threw at last week's Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays in Starkville, Miss.

In her collegiate debut at the Rhodes Invitational Mar. 15, Simpson set her first school record in the event with a mark of 196-1 (59.76m).

Simpson's 200-3 (61.03m) throw Friday places her in the top-25 in the event nationally. Her 200-3 (61.03m) mark currently leads The American.

The Tigers distance group ran in the Washington University (St. Louis) Distance Carnival Friday, and four runners – Megan (Briley) Ryan and Paige Sandwell for the women, Julian Sanchez-Pinto and Tate Wyatt for the men – placed in the top-20 in their respective races.

- For the third-straight meet this outdoor season, Memphis swept all three podium positions in the women's hammer. Amber Simpson won the event with her school-record throw, followed by Mona Jaidi in second and Vigdis Jonsdottir in third.
- Amber Simpson, Mona Jaidi and Vigdis Jonsdottir all set personal-best in the hammer Friday.
- Julian Sanchez-Pinto placed second in the men's 5000 meters with a personal-best time of 14:24.67. His effort Friday improved his personal-best time by nearly 17 seconds.
- Senior Megan (Briley) Ryan improved her time in the 10,000 meters by 25 seconds. Her seventh-place finish Friday was her career-best in the event.
- Paige Sandwell improved her personal-best in the 5000 meters by eight seconds.
- Freshman Tate Wyatt ran in his first collegiate outdoor 5000 meters race.
- Freshman Payton Gleason ran in his first collegiate outdoor 10,000 meters race.
