The Tigers seek to avenge last season's series setback against the Rebels. Memphis posted a series sweep of Ole Miss in the 2017 slate. Overall, the Rebels hold a 58-39 series lead since 1978.
The Tigers are 0-1 against SEC teams this season, previously facing Arkansas on Feb. 27. Memphis also plays at Ole Miss on Apr. 16 and at Mississippi State on May 8. The Rebels fell 3-2 against then-No. 14 ECU on Mar. 6, their only other American opponent outside of the Tigers.
Memphis returns home following a four-game road swing. After a setback at Southeast Missouri to begin the week, the Tigers dropped two of three at Wichita State to open league play. Despite falling in the first two games, Memphis posted a 6-3 win against the Shockers on Sunday to salvage the series.
The series finale at Wichita State saw one of the more balanced offensive games for the Tigers this season, as eight of the nine Memphis hitters recorded at least one hit. Senior Colton Neel provided a 3-for-5 outing with three runs scored, while senior Keith Stepter turned in a game-high three RBI and connected on his second home run of the season.
On the mound, the Tigers bullpen returned to early-season form on Sunday. Memphis relief pitchers did not allow a hit on Sunday afternoon in 4.1 innings of work while combining to strike out five Wichita State hitters. Holding a 6-3 lead in the ninth inning, Neel retired three of the four batters he faced in the frame to record his fourth save to the year, which ranks third in The American.
Offensively, sophomore Ben Brooks leads the team with a .352 average, one of three hitters in the Memphis lineup batting over the .300 mark. The Tigers rank 40th nationally in doubles with 47 this season. That mark also ranks second in The American, with freshman Hunter Goodman tied for the league lead with 10 doubles.
Following the contest against Ole Miss, the Tigers will remain at home for their conference home-opener against Houston. First pitch from FedExPark on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
