Jamirah Shutes notches double-digit scoring for the 20th time this season
DALLAS, Texas – After keeping it a close contest for the first half, the Tigers were unable to match the second half energy of SMU, falling by a score of 71-48 in Dallas.
Jamirah Shutes led the Tigers with 14 points and three steals. Alana Davis scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Giving up a 5-0 run to start the game, Memphis responded with three-straight layups to take a 6-5 lead. The Tigers continued to put pressure on SMU by knocking down three-straight triples by Jada Sinson, Ashia Jones and Shutes to give Memphis a 15-8 lead with 3:16 to go in the quarter. After a quarter of action, the Tigers trailed 17-15.
Brianna Porter would host a block party in the first quarter, sending away three shots in the opening quarter. In doing so, Porter entered the top-10 list for blocks in a season by a senior, and now sits at seventh place.
The second quarter remained a closely contested game, neither team gaining much of an advantage. Though SMU would shoot seven more times than the Tigers, the Memphis defense held strong, limiting the Mustangs to 20 percent shooting. The Tigers would give possessions away, however, allowing SMU to overcome its low shooting percentage. The scoring margin would remain the same at half, with the Mustangs up 27-25 at the midway break.
SMU was able to come out of the half and put a run together, gaining a double-digit lead with 4:39 left in the period. Memphis fought back, switching up the defense and forcing nine turnovers by the Mustangs in the quarter. Shutes notched her 10th point in the quarter, becoming the first Tiger to hit double digits in the game. Headed into the final quarter, the Tigers trailed 48-37.
Though Memphis kept fighting in the fourth, SMU was able to keep its distance until the final buzzer. The Mustangs outrebounded the Tigers 46-28 in their Senior Day win.
