Women’s Golf Finishes Fifth at Valspar Augusta Invitational

One regular season event remaining before conference tournament.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's golf team finished fifth at the Valspar Augusta Invitational, Sunday. The Lady Tigers fired a 298 (+10) in the final round and finished five strokes behind Charlotte.
Senior Sydney Colwill birdied three, her second-to-last hole, to finish her final round with a 75 (+3). That moved her up to a tie for 14that 219 (75-69-75), her second top 15 finish in as many weeks.
Michaela Fletcher also tied for 14th, with a third round 77. Fletcher flirted with under par early in the day, but was pushed to +5 by the end of her round. She finished with rounds of 73-67-77 in her final collegiate trip to Augusta.
Freshman Ana Dawson finished with a 220 in her first collegiate trip to Augusta. Her third round 74 moved her up four spots to a tie for 19thoverall.
Madison Thomas also added a top 25 finish, tying for 23rdat 221. Thomas scored three birdies in her final round and finished at 73 (+1) to jump nine spots in the standings on the final day.
Victoria Gallegos rounded out the Memphis lineup, finishing tied for 39th at 226. The freshman was at +1 following a birdie at one (her 13th hole of the day after the shotgun start), but bogeyed three of her final five holes to move a spot down in the individual standings.
With four players in the top 20 finishers, number 41 ranked Texas Tech claimed the team title with an 860 (281-281-298), four strokes ahead of number 33 ranked Purdue. Tech's Sofia Garcia, the top ranked player in the field at the event claimed individual medalist honors with a 209 (-7). She followed her second round 66 with a 68 on Sunday for a two-stroke win over Purdue's Melati Putri.
Memphis' next event is also its final of the regular season. The Memphis Women's Intercollegiate will be held April 1-2, at Ridgeway Country Club.
