Softball Falls to North Alabama, Murray State Friday

Delaney Smith registered three hits against the Racers
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team opened the Tiger Classic Friday afternoon with a pair of setbacks to North Alabama and Murray State. The Lions stole game one away from the Tigers by a 2-1 margin before the Racers defeated Memphis by a 6-3 score.
Memphis falls to 12-12 on the year with three games remaining at the Tiger Classic. The Tigers are set to take on Texas Tech and Maine Saturday afternoon.
The last inning in game one and the first inning in game two were the deciding innings in each of the Memphis contests. The Tigers carried a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning when an RBI double cleared the bases to lift North Alabama over Memphis.
Gracie Morton hit her first collegiate triple against the Lions and scored on a bunt single by Baylee Smith. Karli Perque went the distance in game one and struck out a career-high eight batters.
Against the Racers, Memphis fell in a 3-0 hole early after allowing three quick runs in the top of the first. The Tigers answered with one in the first and one in the sixth, but struggled to gain an advantage over Murray State.
In the top of the seventh, Murray State launched a three-run home run to take a four-run lead over the Tigers. Memphis again attempted to answer, but fell short by scoring just one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Delaney Smith led Memphis against the Racers with three hits. The Tigers scattered 10 hits in game two compared to just two against UNA. Mariah Nichols tallied 6.1 innings of work before Bayleigh Wisher came in relief in the top of the seventh. Nichols struck out a season-high seven batters as she falls to 4-6 on the year.
