Shutes and Davis lead Memphis with 10 points each
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tigers women's basketball team fell to Wichita State Wednesday evening, dropping a 55-46 contest on Alumni Night. Memphis moves to 9-13 overall and 4-5 in AAC play.
Â
The Tigers were led by Jamirah Shutes and Alana Davis with 10 points each in a game that was neck-and-neck until the last quarter of play.
Â
Memphis came out with defensive intensity right from the opening tip, as Brianna Porter rejected the first shot of Wichita State. The Tigers would go on to force six turnovers by Wichita State, but the Memphis offense was unable to capitalize. The bright spot for the Tigers was their work from the charity stripe. Memphis hit 5-of-6 freebies during the quarter, keeping the Tigers in the game. Despite the offensive struggles, the Tigers trailed 11-9 after one period.
Â
The offense started to flow for both teams in the second quarter. Memphis shot 50 percent in the second, led by Jasmine James' six points in the period. However, as the Tigers offense got rolling, so too did the Shockers'. After hitting one three-pointer in the first quarter, the Shockers added three more in the second.
Â
Jada Stinson kept the Tigers close with a three-pointer of her own, knocking down her first triple with 31 seconds remaining in the first half. At the halfway point, Memphis trailed Wichita State 27-22.
Â
Entering the second half, the Tigers came out with a renewed defensive mindset. Memphis held the visitors to 38 percent shooting in the quarter, forcing three turnovers. The renewed intensity allowed the Tigers to close the gap, coming within one multiple times in the third. Offensively, Memphis had seven different players score during the third, including Stinson's second three-pointer of the game.
Â
As the final quarter of play started, Memphis was within striking distance, but fell into another shooting slump. With the offense struggling, the Shockers were able to build a double-digit lead with under a minute to play.
