Memphis looks to sweep the season series against Wichita State; the Tigers defeated the Shockers 71-50 in Wichita on January 12. Alana Davis scored a career-high 26 against the Shockers back in January. Memphis held Wichita State to 2-of-27 from beyond the arc and 17-of-60 from the floor overall.
Most recently, the Tigers finished off a comeback victory against Tulsa on Saturday. The 59-56 win saw the Tigers down as many as 11 points with four minutes left in the third, but Jamirah Shutes would score 10 of her game-high 24 points down the stretch to bring the Tigers back. Shutes would go on to ice the game with a pair of free throws with 6.9 seconds left.
Shutes, who was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for her game against Tulsa, leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game. Her scoring output ranks ninth in The American and first among conference freshmen. Memphis has two other scorers in the top-25 in the conference, with Davis ranking 16th at 12.0 points per game and Taylor Barnes ranking 23rd with 9.8 points per game.
Davis paces the Tigers on the glass, grabbing 8.0 rebounds per game. The sophomore averages 4.0 offensive rebounds per game, the second-highest mark in the AAC.
Brianna Porter continued to make a defensive impact against Tulsa, recording three blocked shots. Porter is tied for ninth in the conference in blocked shots and has seven games of multiple blocks. She is also four blocks shy of breaking into the top-10 list for blocks in a single season by a senior at Memphis.
Scouting the Shockers
Wichita State visits the Bluff City following a 65-40 loss to Temple on Saturday. Carla Bremaud and Seraphine Bastin both scored in double-figures, but their efforts were not enough. Bremaud leads the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per contest. The Shockers are balanced in scoring, with six players scoring five or more points per game.
After a slow start to conference, the Shockers picked up consecutive wins after defeating Tulane and ECU in back-to-back games to end January.
In AAC play, Bremaud has averaged 10.6 points per game, knocking down 13 three-pointers in eight conference games.
After triumphing over the Shockers earlier this season, the Tigers have a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series against Wichita State.
