Tigers down Lipscomb 5-2.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team completed a perfect weekend with a 5-2 win over Lipscomb (7-3), Sunday.
"Lipscomb is a great team," head coach Hayden Perez said. "They are tough and we knew that going in, but our team had a very positive approach to the match and it showed on the court. I felt like we competed well on every court, win or lose."
Memphis took an early 1-0 lead with wins at two and three doubles. Katherine Cao and Hannah Davies got the first Tiger win of the day, 6-2, at two. Lipscomb answered back with a 6-3 win at one doubles, but just a serve or two later, Memphis closed up the doubles point with a 6-3 win at three from Lina Hohnold and Laura Bente.
Bente stayed on the gas in her singles match, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead at two before her opponent could get a point on the board. She claimed her opening set 6-1 in the main arena while teammates Katherine Cao and Hohnhold grabbed their first sets 6-2 and 6-1, respectively.
"We are being very consistent at 'bringing it' on match days," Perez said. "That begins with 'bringing it' at practice. I really like where this team is heading!"
Bente made it 2-0 Memphis with a 6-1, 6-1 win at two. Cao was right behind her with a 6-2, 6-1 win at five singles while teammates at one, three and four singles were trying to bounce back from first set losses.
The match win was decided on court six, where Hohnhold picked up her seventh dual season win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
With the match decided, the remaining three courts played out. Lipscomb grabbed its first win at one singles, 6-4, 6-3 while Hannah Davies came back from a 6-3 first set loss to win her second set 7-5. She moved into a super tiebreak while on the court next door, Claire Sullivan forced a second set tiebreak after dropping her first set 6-4.
Davies won her super, 10-8, while Sullivan grabbed her second set tiebreaker, 8-6, forcing a super tiebreak on court four. Lipscomb grabbed its second point in that super tiebreak, 10-6, for the final 5-2 score.
Memphis will be on the road for the next six matches, starting with a weekend non-conference series in Virginia at Old Dominion, Saturday and at William & Mary, Sunday.
