The Tigers prepare for Tulane after taking a tough loss at the hands of Cincinnati on Wednesday. Despite impressive scoring outputs from Jamirah Shutes (24 pts) and Alana Davis (21 pts), the Memphis defense struggled to slow down the Cincinnati offense, resulting in an 89-69 setback.
Shutes, who hit the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season, paces the Tigers with 13.7 points per game. She sits at seventh in The American in scoring and is the leading scorer among conference freshmen. Shutes' four 20-point games lead all freshmen in the AAC. Davis, who ranks second on the team in scoring, is 17th in the conference at 12.2 points per game.
Davis also continues to lead Memphis in rebounding. The sophomore forward averages 8.3 boards per game, with a league-leading 4.0 offensive rebounds per contest.
Despite the anomalous shooting night from the Bearcats, the Tigers allow the 18th lowest three-point percentage in the nation, allowing opponents to shoot just 27 percent from beyond the arc. Throughout the conference schedule, Memphis opponents have combined to shoot 34.9 percent from the floor and 22 percent from three-point distance.
Scouting the Green Wave
Tulane welcomes the Tigers after a 61-59 victory over then second-ranked UCF. Led by Krystal Freeman's 25-point, 10-rebound performance, the neck-and-neck game was won when Erin Gutierrez knocked down a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining. Gutierrez would finish Wednesday's game with seven points and a floor-high 10 assists.
Freeman leads the Green Wave with 13.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Her 25 points against UCF were a season-high and the third time this season she has eclipsed 20 points.
Tulane holds a top-four defense in The American, allowing just 58 points per game while holding opponents to 35 percent shooting, the second-lowest mark in the conference. Offensively, Tulane hits three-pointers at a 31.9 percent clip, the third-highest percentage in the AAC.
Memphis and Tulane last played on Jan. 30, with the Tigers falling in heart-breaking fashion, 62-61. Memphis leads Tulane 27-21 in the all-time series, as well as an 11-10 record in New Orleans.
