Jamirah Shutes scores 24, Alana Davis nets 21
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team suffered an 89-69 setback in their annual Play4Kay game on Wednesday. Jamirah Shutes and Alana Davis combined for 45 points in the loss, with Shutes scoring 24 and Davis scoring 21.
The Tigers started the game attacking the paint, scoring 14 of their 18 points in close in the opening stanza. The aggressive driving and dishing of Memphis saw the Tigers shoot 53 percent in the quarter, led by Davis' six points. Shutes added a well-rounded four points, three rebounds and three assists in the period.
Memphis came out in the second quarter on a 14-7 run that tied the game. During the run, Herndon hit a rainbow three-pointer at the end of the shot clock and followed it with a score on the next Memphis possession to tie the game at 32-all with 4:14 left in the half. Cincinnati responded with a run of its own and headed into the half with a 45-34 lead.
Entering the second half, the teams made an emphasis on attacking the basket. Both teams scored several times in the early part of the third by way of layups and putbacks. But the Cincinnati offense pieced together an extra basket here and there that the Tigers were unable to answer, allowing the Bearcats' lead to grow to 69-49 at the end of the quarter.
Memphis finished the game shooting 17-of-20 from the charity stripe, with the tandem of Shutes and Davis hitting 16 of them. The Tigers outscored Cincinnati 42-32 in points in the paint.
