Tigers to battle ECU Wednesday night in Greenville.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It may be of little consolation to University of Memphis coach Penny Hardaway, but his team is not alone trying to determine what makes life on the American Athletic Conference road so difficult.
As the Tigers (14-10, 6-5 The American) prepare for Wednesday night's league game against ECU at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C., they will be attempting to end a three-game road losing streak. Overall, the UofM is 1-4 in road conference games, the lone win coming Jan. 13 at Tulane.
Hardaway, in his first season as UofM coach, would like to erase a recent stretch of road nightmares.
Memphis led for only 54 seconds at nationally ranked Houston and trailed the Cougars by 22 at one point before falling, 90-77. At Temple, the Tigers never led and trailed by as many as 20 in the first half. At Tulsa, the UofM led for eight seconds and trailed by 22 late in the first half. And in a forgettable start at USF, Memphis fell behind 27-1 and trailed by 27 before staging a determined second-half rally to make it respectable.
To win on the road, Hardaway said the team's energy level has to be intense for 40 minutes. The Tigers can't encounter the brief lulls that have allowed their opponents to recover.
"The team that plays with desperation is usually the one that wins on the road," Hardaway said. "As a team, everyone on the floor has to give it their all for 40 minutes."
At East Carolina, the Tigers will play a team they defeated earlier this season at FedExForum. It was a six-point win that came after the UofM rallied from a 15-point, first-half deficit.
In that game, the Tigers got 10 second-half points each from freshmen guards Tyler Harris and Antwann Jones to fuel the comeback. The UofM trailed, 40-36, at the half.
Jayden Gardner, the leading candidate for league freshman of the year honors, had 18 points and eight rebounds in the game.
As for the Tigers, Hardaway intends to start five seniors, as he has in the past two games. Jeremiah Martin, Kareem Brewton, Raynere Thornton, Kyvon Davenport and Mike Parks will be on the floor to start the game for the fourth time this season. The seniors-only lineup is 2-1.
"This is a veterans' league," Hardaway said. "They've already seen every team and played in every arena and they understand what's going to happen. They need to be leaders."
