Martin leads Memphis to victory with 31-point performance.
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Jeremiah Martin scored a game-high 31 points and the University of Memphis shot 56 percent to claim a 79-69 American Athletic Conference victory over ECU Wednesday at Minges Coliseum.
The Tigers (15-10, 7-5 The American) won their second straight – and their second league road game – by outlasting several determined runs in the second half by ECU, which slipped to 9-15 overall and 2-10 in league play.
Memphis made 28-of-50 shots and 17-of-25 free throws to start the two-game road trip with a win.
"First of all, it feels good to get a road win because we haven't had one since Tulane," said Tigers coach Penny Hardaway.
The Tigers also got 12 points from Mike Parks Jr., who was 5-of-5 from the field, and a solid effort from freshman reserve guard Alex Lomax. Lomax had six assists and only one turnover. Isaiah Maurice added nine points and seven rebounds in 12 minutes.
Hardaway was pleased with his team's effort against an ECU team that led the Tigers by 15 at FedExForum before falling.
"Coach (Joe Dooley) has his guys playing hard," Hardaway said. "So I knew it wouldn't be easy."
ECU's Seth LeDay finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates, while Shawn Williams scored 14, Jayden Gardner 13 with K.J. Davis and Tyler Foster netting 10 each.
Memphis held ECU to 39.7 percent shooting.
Ahead by three at halftime, the Tigers couldn't extend their lead past single digits. The Pirates kept close and took the lead midway through the half on two free throws by Seth LeDay.
The Tigers and Pirates exchanged the lead on several occasions in the closing 10 minutes before the UofM pulled away behind Kareem Brewton and Martin. Martin made 5-of-6 free throws in the final two minutes and Brewton made two layups in the final four minutes. The two guards accounted for the last 17 points the Tigers scored.
At the half, the Tigers led, 40-37, thanks to a 3-pointer in the closing seconds by Martin.
Memphis led for most of the first half after taking a 9-7 lead with 16 minutes left on a step-back jumper by Lomax. The Tigers eventually stretched their advantage to eight points (23-15) on a basket from Isaiah Maurice.
The Tigers had a chance to push their lead to double digits in the closing six minutes of the half, but missed four of eight free throws during a two-minute stretch. ECU tied the game at 37-all with 2:07 left on a baseline jumper by Jayden Garden just before the shot clock expired.
Memphis shot 57.7 percent (15-of-26) in the first half and got a solid effort from Lomax. He had seven points and four assists, entering the game in the opening minute after starter Kyvon Davenport had to leave following knocking knees with an ECU player.
The Tigers remain on the conference road to play UCF Saturday in Orlando. Memphis defeated the Knights, 77-57, earlier this season at FedExForum.
