Memphis holds Tiger Toy Drive against Blazers
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After splitting a pair of games in Bimini, Bahamas over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Memphis women's basketball team returns home for a Sunday showdown against UAB. Tipoff against the Blazers is slated for 2 p.m. CT on Sunday. Memphis is hosting its Tiger Toy Drive on Sunday, and fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the game to help benefit a child in need. Fans that do so will receive free admission to the game.

While in the Bahamas, Memphis participated in the Junkanoo Jam, splitting a pair of games on the island of Bimini. The Tigers claimed victory over Kansas State on Nov. 29 before falling the next day to LSU. Jamirah Shutes was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 20.5 points for the two games, including a career-best 27 points against the Wildcats.
On the year, Shutes continues to lead the team in assists and steals, placing third in the American Athletic Conference in both categories, averaging 4.3 assists and 2.5 steals per game. The sophomore also tops the roster in scoring, netting 17.8 points per contest, an average that ranks fourth in the AAC.
Freshman Madison Griggs has also proven to be a key contributor early in the season, providing a strong shooting option from beyond the arc. So far this season, Griggs has canned 20 shots from three, the second-most connections in the league. Her shooting percentage of 42.6 ranks fifth in the conference.
Memphis has gotten production early this season from its class of newcomers. The first-year Tigers have pulled down 53 percent of the squad's rebounds while scoring 47 percent of the team's points. Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu accounts for 10.1 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per game.
Scouting the Blazers
UAB has started the season with a 5-2 record and is currently on a four-game winning streak. Most recently, the Blazers defeated Samford on Tuesday by a score of 76-69. Five Blazers scored in double-figures, led by Rachael Childress' 20.
Childress leads the team in scoring, netting 16.9 points per contest. She is joined in double-figure scoring by Miyah Barnes (16.1 ppg) and Trista Magee (12.7 ppg). The trio has combined for 58 three-pointers, hitting them at a 43 percent clip.
UAB's offense has been the engine of the team, as the squad scores 80 points per game. Across the roster, the Blazers have hit 73 shots from beyond the arc, shooting 43 percent as a team from three-point land.
