Tigers picked eighth in preseason poll
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With anticipation building for the 2020 baseball season, the American Athletic Conference announced its Preseason All-Conference Team and annual preseason poll Monday afternoon.
The Tigers had two representatives on the league's Preseason All-Conference team in senior Alec Trela and sophomore Hunter Goodman. Additionally, the Tigers were picked by the league coaches to finish eighth in the conference.
Trela, who is making the transition to third base defensively, started every game for the Tigers throughout the 2019 season. He also leads the team with 169 career starts.
Trela capped the 2019 campaign ranked second on the team in home runs (6), second in doubles (15), third in RBI (32) and fourth in hits (53). In his junior campaign, Trela posted 15 multiple-hit games, and his 38 walks drawn led the team.
Goodman, who was also named a Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball earlier this month, returns as the Tigers' leading hitter from 2019. Named a five-time Freshman All-American last year, Goodman also earned First Team All-Conference honors and was named the league's Newcomer Position Player of the Year last season.
Goodman posted a .326 average in his rookie campaign with 78 hits, 67 RBI, 16 doubles, 13 home runs and a pair of triples, all of which were team-highs. Over the summer, the Arlington, Tenn., native played in 43 games with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League. In the Cape, Goodman collected 37 RBI, 10 doubles and eight homers throughout the season.
The Tigers open the 2020 baseball season at FedExPark with a three-game series against Xavier beginning Feb. 14. The Tigers are set to play 31 home games this season, including a pair of contests against Ole Miss and Mississippi State at AutoZone Park.
