Jamirah Shutes recorded first career double-double in the setback
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team fell just short Saturday afternoon to the visiting Eastern Kentucky Colonels by a score of 63-60. The Tigers drop to 1-1 on the young season.
Â
Sophomore Jamirah Shutes led the Tigers with her first career double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Madison Griggs added 11 points for her first double-digit performance at Memphis.
 Â
Though the offense for both teams started slowly, a defensive pressure in the half court stymied any chance the Colonels had at producing offensively. The Tigers held EKU to eight points on 17 percent shooting through the first quarter, including 0-of-7 from deep.
Â
After calling a timeout with the score 8-7 in favor of EKU, Memphis seized momentum and the lead in the quarter on a pair of back-to-back three pointers in back-to-back possessions by Griggs. Memphis would end the quarter with a 13-8 lead.
Â
The back-and-forth contest continued into the second quarter. EKU, starting the quarter with a five-point deficit, whittled it down and tied the game on a pair of free throws with five minutes remaining in the half. The Colonels would build a three-point lead with just under three minutes in the half before an 8-0 run by the Tigers would give the home team the lead. With the clock ticking to zero, Aerial Wilson would take a defensive rebound coast-to-coast and put home a layup at the buzzer, giving Memphis a 28-25 lead.
Â
Memphis and EKU would trade shots throughout the second half, with the Tigers maintaining the lead into the fourth quarter. There was a shift in momentum, however, as EKU took the final lead of the game with 6:51 remaining. The Colonels finished the contest holding the Tigers at arm's length until the final buzzer, despite a near-comeback by Memphis.
Â
The Tigers return to action Wednesday, Nov. 13 on the road at Louisiana Tech. Tipoff against the Lady Techsters is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Ruston, La. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow the Tigers on social media at @MemphisWBB.
