Tigers fall at Louisiana Tech Wednesday

Jamirah Shutes leads Memphis with 21 points and seven assists
RUSTON, La. – A second-half comeback fell short Wednesday evening for the University of Memphis women's basketball team as the Tigers fell to Louisiana Tech by a score of 83-74 on the road. Memphis falls to 1-2 and returns home Sunday for a 10:30 a.m. game against George Washington.Â

Freshman Madison Griggs put together a solid performance for Memphis, going 4-for-5 from deep and finishing with a career-high 14 points. She also led the Tigers with four steals and contributed two assists. Jamirah Shutes posted her second-straight 20-point performance with a team-high 21 points and a career-high seven assists.Â

Junior transfer Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu was one rebound shy of recording her first-career double-double after finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds. Alana Davis chipped in her first double-digit performance of the season with 14 points, adding five offensive rebounds.Â

Trailing by as many as eight in the first half, Memphis rallied back to take the lead three times before the Lady Techsters took the final lead with 6:11 remaining in the game.

Louisiana Tech got off to a fast start against the Tigers, taking a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest. Memphis responded with an 8-2 run of its own to take the lead back from the Lady Techsters.

In a game of small scoring bursts, Louisiana Tech had an answer down the stretch of the first quarter. The Lady Techsters built a six-point lead with after a three-pointer with 1:31 left in the period. Griggs promptly went down to the left corner and hit her first three-pointer of the contest to cut the LA Tech lead back down to three.Â

In the second quarter, LA Tech built a multi-possession lead over Memphis before the Tigers had a response. In the span of 11 seconds in the final minute of the first half, Keke Hunter hit back-to-back lay-ups to cut LA Tech's lead down to four.

Memphis was plagued by turnovers in the first half, but outrebounded the Lady Techsters 20-15.

Out of the locker room, Memphis came out and rattled off a 14-7 run to take the lead over once again from the Lady Techsters. Griggs' second three-pointer of the game capped the run to put Memphis up 48-47 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter.

The two squads proceeded to exchange a total of six lead changes in the following 10 minutes of the contest. A basket by Fankam Mendjiadeu with 6:56 remaining in the contest proved to be the final lead Memphis would possess as Louisiana Tech hit crucial shots and free throws in the final minutes of the game to pull away from the Tigers.Â

Memphis shot a season-high 46.0 percent from the floor and finished with 37 rebounds compared to 28 by the Lady Techsters.Â
The Tigers are back in action on Sunday for a morning game against George Washington at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Tipoff is slated at 10:30 a.m. against the Colonials.
