Larisey, Moberg, Jones earn Player of the Year awards
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Six Memphis women's soccer student-athletes garnered American Athletic Conference postseason accolades, and three Tigers earned the league's Player of the Year awards, the league office announced Tuesday.
Junior Clarissa Larisey was voted the AAC's co-Offensive Player of the Year, junior Elizabeth Moberg was named the Goalkeeper of the Year and freshman Mya Jones claimed Rookie of the Year honors. Additionally, the Memphis coaching staff was voted the Coaching Staff of the Year. Tuesday's awards marked the first time Memphis has had three Player of the Year honors in the same season since 2008.
Stasia Mallin joined Larisey, Moberg and Jones as a First Team All-Conference selection. Senior Serena Dolan and sophomore Tanya Boychuk earned Second Team All-Conference honors, while Jones was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team.
A unanimous First Team selection, Larisey finished the regular season with team-highs in 15 goals and 34 points. A MAC Hermann Award Watch List honoree, Larisey capped the regular season scoring at least one point in six of the last seven contests. The Ottawa, Ontario native registered a pair of hat tricks in 2019, becoming the first Tiger since 2013 to log three goals in a game. Tuesday's nod marks Larisey's second First Team All-Conference honor after being voted to the league's first team last season.
Moberg earned Memphis' first Goalkeeper of the Year honor in program history after a standout season in net. The junior posted a 0.31 goals-against average to compliment 32 saves and a 15-0-1 record. Her 10 shutouts this season give her 27 for her career, which is a new AAC career clean sheet record. Last season, Moberg capped her sophomore year with Second Team All-AAC honors.
Jones enjoyed an impressive rookie season after netting three goals and eight assists for 14 points. Her eight assists rank second in Memphis single-season history for helpers by a freshman. The Calgary, Alberta native was listed to the AAC Weekly Awards list five times this season, claiming three Rookie of the Week nods.
Mallin earned her first AAC All-Conference nod after a standout senior year. The Carmel, Ind., native tallied a career-high 12 assists and added three goals. Defensively, the captain helped Memphis to 12 shutouts this season and anchored a back line that limited opponents to seven shots per game. Mallin's 12 helpers ranked fifth nationally at the end of the regular season.
Dolan served as a staple in the Memphis midfield, adding two goals and four assists in her senior campaign. The MAC Hermann Watch List member started all 18 matches for the Tigers and amassed 1386 minutes played. Tuesday's honor marks the captain's third postseason award after being named First Team All-Conference last year and added to the All-Rookie team in 2016.
Boychuk tallied her second postseason honor after being named to the AAC All-Rookie Team last year. The sophomore registered eight goals and two assists while serving as a team captain in 2019. Boychuk earned her first career brace in the season-opener against Little Rock, while her eight scores throughout the regular season rank second on the team.
The Tigers return to action hosting the American Athletic Conference Tournament this week. Memphis will open the annual AAC event in the semifinal round against SMU on Thursday. Kickoff from Park Avenue Campus is set for 7 p.m.
