No. 8 Tigers Host Pair of Conference Foes in North Texas, Florida Atlantic
Oct 08, 2025 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – No. 8 Memphis women's soccer returned home for two games at Track and Soccer Stadium this week, hosting North Texas on Thursday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. before taking on Florida Atlantic at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 12.
The Tigers (10-0-2, 4-0-1 American) were again promoted by the United Soccer Coaches poll on Tuesday, moving up to eighth and making it four weeks in the top 10 this season. It's the fifth time in program history that they have spent four weeks in the top 10 (2011, 2019, 2023, 2024).
Game One: North Texas
Memphis will be looking to win a fourth consecutive game in conference play; it would be their second four-game winning streak of the season after starting the season 5-0. They'll be taking on a North Texas team in its third year in the American; Memphis holds the series lead 2-0-1. Last season, the teams played a scoreless draw in the penultimate game of the regular season, which was enough for Memphis to secure the regular season conference championship.
North Texas (5-8-1, 1-3 American) picked up their first win of the conference season last time out, a 1-0 victory at Temple. They sit in 10th in the conference table, two points off the top eight which would qualify them for postseason play. Last year, they scrounged three points in their last three games against higher-seeded teams (including Memphis) to earn the No. 7 seed and reach the conference tournament, falling in the quarterfinals to South Florida.
The Mean Green are coached by John Hedlund, in his 31st year at the helm of the program. He is eighth among active Division-I coaches in career wins (405). Junior Mia Bernard leads the attack with five goals and four assists, tied with Memphis' Ellis Kelly for the fifth most points in the conference.
Game Two: Florida Atlantic
The Tigers will host another one of the American Conference's newer teams, welcoming Florida Atlantic to town. Memphis has won all four games against the Owls, most recently last season in their first in-conference battle, a 1-0 Tiger victory behind an Ashley Henderson goal.
Florida Atlantic (4-7-3, 1-2-2 American) have just one conference win but a pair of commendable draws against UTSA and Tulsa who sit ahead of them in the standings. At present, the Owls would be the eighth and final team to reach the conference tournament. Between home games and in-state, non-conference matchups, they have only left the state of Florida twice this season, losing at Rice and drawing at East Carolina.
Patrick Baker is in his 13th season as head coach of Florida Atlantic, having had stints at Georgia, Florida State, Rollins College, Penn and NC Wesleyan. He is the only coach to qualify for the NCAA Tournament at the Division 1, 2 and 3 levels. The Owls are fourth in the conference in goals, fueled by Sloane Young with seven and Hailey Santiago with five.
