MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Behind a pair of record performances, Memphis wide receiver Antonio Gibson and kicker Riley Patterson were recognized by the American Athletic Conference on Monday as two of the conference's players of the week.
Gibson was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, while Patterson earned the AAC's Special Teams Player of the Week nod. Both awards are the first such conference honors for the duo.
Gibson set a conference and school record with 386 all-purpose yards in the Tigers' 54-48 win against No. 15/14 SMU on Saturday. The senior finished with career highs behind 97 yards rushing, 130 yards receiving and 159 yards in kickoff returns.
The Stockbridge, Ga., native totaled a career-high three touchdowns and became the first Memphis player since 2008 to score a touchdown three different ways (rushing, receiving, kickoff return). Gibson was also named the Walter Camp National Player of the Week on Sunday and garnered CFPA National Performer of the Week honorable mention.
Patterson matched a school record with 18 total points kicked in the Tigers' win against the Mustangs. The junior was 4-for-4 on his field goal attempts, including three in the second quarter, and converted all six extra points.
His four made field goals matched a career best, as Patterson connected on distances of 30, 49, 34 and 50 yards. His 50-yard field goal also matched a season-long. The Edwardsville, Ill., native also became the first Memphis player to make three field goals in one quarter since 2003.
Memphis enters its second bye weekend of the year with an 8-1 overall record and a 4-1 mark in AAC play. The Tigers have back-to-back road games on tap with a trip to Houston on Nov. 16 followed by a visit to USF on Nov. 23. The team will close the regular season with Cincinnati on Nov. 29. Tickets for the home finale, which will also be Memphis' Senior Day, are on sale now by calling (901) 678-2331.
