Three tournaments, Ole Miss and three conference series included in home slate
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Head coach Natalie Poole and the University of Memphis softball team announced the 2020 spring schedule Thursday afternoon. Memphis opens the season up with three tournaments on the road including a trip to Hawai'i before hosting three tournaments during late February into early March.
Â
The Tigers have a home game against Ole Miss slated for March 25 as well as three conference series to highlight the home slate.
Â
"We are excited about the schedule we have laid out for the 2020 season," stated Poole. "We are always looking to put together a good body of opponents that will be competitive and give us a chance to be considered for postseason play as long as we play at a high-level and do our job."
Â
The 2020 season begins for the Tigers in Honolulu, Hawai'i with five games scheduled to be played. Iowa State, Northern Colorado and Hawai'i are guaranteed opponents as the final two opponents will be determined by bracket play at the tournament.
Â
Memphis also heads to Fort Myers, Fla. for five games at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament, featuring contests against UIC, Arkansas, Furman and FGCU. The final non-conference road tournament is a drive down to Mobile, Alabama where the Tigers will play five games against Stephen F. Austin, Jacksonville and host school South Alabama. Â
Â
"We will continue to have our six preseason tournament weekends, which help us prepare for our tough conference opponents," added Poole. "We were very young last year, and while we are still young, we have a little more experience and I'm excited to watch this team compete."
Â
The Tigers open up at home for the Blues City Classic on Feb. 28. Northern Illinois, Northwestern State, Western Illinois, Evansville and North Alabama will make the trip to Memphis for the home-opening tournament. Memphis then welcomes Western Carolina, Indiana State, Butler and Belmont on March 6-8 for the UofM Softball Tournament.
Â
The final home non-conference tournament is the Tiger Classic on March 13-15. UMass-Lowell, Syracuse, Tennessee State and Purdue will compete in that tournament.
Â
In addition to Ole Miss, Memphis welcomes Youngstown State, UT Martin and Alcorn State for single games throughout the months of March and April. Youngstown State and Alcorn State will be doubleheaders.
Â
"We will be competing against some tough regional opponents, as well as some from other parts of the nation," said Poole.
Â
Conference play for Memphis begins on March 20 in Greenville against ECU. The home conference opener is set for March 27-29 against USF. Home series for the Tigers during AAC play include USF, UConn, and Tulsa.
Â
The season will culminate with the American Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by UCF on May 7-9. All eight teams qualify for the conference tournament.
