Shutes scores 23, Fankam Mendjiadeu records double-double in 70-66 win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Using stifling defense in the first half, the University of Memphis women's basketball team held on for a 70-66 win at SIU on Wednesday. The Tigers improved to 2-3 on the year with the win.
Led by Jamirah Shutes' 23 points and Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu's first career double-double, the Tigers made stops down the stretch to grab their first road win of the year. Four Tigers scored in double-figures in the Tigers first win in Carbondale since 1996.
After a fast-paced start to the game that saw Memphis down 16-10 at the first-quarter media timeout, the Tiger defense locked in, holding the Salukis scoreless for the remaining five minutes of the quarter, taking a 22-16 lead.
The lock-down defense continued into the second quarter, as the Tigers allowed only six points from the home team. On the offensive side of the ball, Memphis scored 14 of their 21 points in the paint, punishing the Salukis on the offensive glass and extending to a 43-22 halftime lead.
SIU flipped the script in the third quarter, taking a chunk out of the lead by limiting paint touches for Memphis and keeping the Tigers off of the offensive glass. Using a 22-8 quarter, the Salukis were able to trim the Memphis lead to 51-44.
Down the stretch, SIU would approach the Tigers' score, trimming the lead to as little as three points in the late stages of the game. During the quarter, Fankam Mendjiadeu reached double-digit scoring for the fourth time this season. Having eclipsed 10 rebounds in the third quarter, she logged her first double-double as a Tiger, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
