Shutes Leads Tigers in Setback to Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team fell to Tulsa Wednesday evening by a score of 46-39 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Golden Hurricane used a second half surge to drop the Tigers to 5-10 on the year and 0-2 in American Athletic Conference play.
Jamirah Shutes led Memphis with 13 points while Kiana Coomber pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Back-to-back baskets by Kiana Coomber and Jamirah Shutes opened the contest 4-0 in favor of the Tigers. The Tigers and Golden Hurricane proceeded to exchange baskets and free throws to where the game was tied with 2:18 remaining in the first. A jumper at the buzzer by Taylor Barnes put Memphis up by two, 12-10.
Barnes' first quarter buzzer beater sparked an 11-0 Memphis run capped by a Jamirah Shutes lay-up with 5:40 on the clock. The Memphis defense had Tulsa on complete lockdown, allowing just one made basket the entire period and taking a 28-12 lead at halftime.
Out of the intermission, Tulsa chipped away at the Memphis lead. The Golden Hurricane outscored the Tigers 14-5 in the third period and sent the Tigers into the fourth quarter with a 33-26 lead.
Tulsa's momentum in the third quarter carried over into the fourth and with 4:50 remaining in the game, the two teams were tied at 35-35. A Golden Hurricane basket with 3:31 on the clock proved to be the final lead change of the contest.
Memphis ran into foul trouble early in the fourth quarter and ultimately for the game, Tulsa found its way to the line 25 times, while the Tigers only made nine trips to charity stripe.
