Memphis to face Winthrop in ITA Kick-Off consolation
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Facing its highest-ranked opponent since 2010, Memphis women's tennis couldn't capture the momentum needed for an upset against the nation's second-ranked squad.
The Tigers dropped a 4-0 decision at No. 2 Vanderbilt to open its season at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Nashville. Memphis will face a quick turnaround as the Tigers play Winthrop Saturday morning.

"Vanderbilt is a strong team and deserves credit for playing a good match," head coach Hayden Perez said. "Our girls competed hard and I was proud of our efforts. This was our first match of the season and I loved watching them play. They have been working hard and I know they were excited to get the season started."

The host Commodores used a quick start to capture the doubles point. Despite falling behind early, the Tigers closed the gap on all three courts but dropped decisions on courts 2 and 3. Memphis sophomore duo Lina Hohnhold and Alisha Reayer held a lead in the ninth game before their match was left unfinished at 4-4.

In singles, Memphis displayed flashes of rallies in the opening sets before Vanderbilt secured wins on courts 1, 3 and 4 to seal the win.

"Tomorrow will be challenging as well and we are looking forward to competing hard," Perez added.
