Memphis Upsets No. 52 Columbia, 4-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team picked up a big win over No. 52 Columbia on Saturday in a tight 4-3 contest.
The Tigers fell on courts two and three in doubles by scores of 6-1 and 6-3, clinching the doubles point for the Lions. Sofiia Mykhailets/Emma Dvorackova battled to a 5-5 score on court one before the match was left unfinished.
Down 1-0, Memphis had to win four of the six singles matches. Sophomore Sofiia Mykhailets and a trio of Tiger freshmen including, Alicia Mall, Natalia Koppova and Emma Dvorackova, all won their first sets. First off court was Mykhailets, winning her fifth singles match of the season by a score of 6-2, 6-3. Rebecca Frant suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss on court six that gave the lead back to Columbia, 2-1. Mall brought Memphis even after a 6-1, 6-3 win on court two. Columbia's Margaret Hui put the Lions one point away from victory with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over Clemence Thouard. After dropping her second set, Dvorackova prevailed on court four to even the score at 3-3.
Court three proved to be the deciding match, featuring Memphis' Natalia Koppova and Columbia's Emily Baek. Koppova, a freshman from Slovakia, won the first set of the match 6-4 but Baek evened the match after a 7-5 second-set win. The third set went was even at 5-5 before Koppova broke serve and then served out the match, putting away a volley at the net on match point and claiming victory for the Tigers over the ranked Lions. The win was Memphis' first ranked win since defeating No. 22 Clemson on March 15 of last year.
Memphis improved their record to 2-8 and will be back in action March 2 when they travel to Mississippi State. First serve is set for 11 a.m. in Starkville, Mississippi.
