MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a decorated women's soccer career at the University of Memphis, Olivia Gauthier will take her talents overseas. The Tiger captain signed a professional contract with Lidköpings FK of Sweden, the club announced.
Gauthier, a native of Saint John, New Brunswick, will join as the club's first player from Canada in the franchise's history.
"I knew I wanted to continue playing," Gauthier said. "This was an opportunity that lined up through my agent. This was the most appealing to me based on competition and I'm excited to get started."
Gauthier earned United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-America honors to cap her career. The four-time all-conference selection was also named the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Year to help the Tigers capture their first AAC crown this season.
"I couldn't be happier for Olivia. She's been such an instrumental piece of our team over the last four years," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "She captained our team for three years, and she was essentially a pro when she got here. It's no surprise that she's now signing a professional contract. It's another step in a long career ahead, and I couldn't be prouder of her."
Although Lidköpings preseason begins in February, Gauthier will finish her degree this semester before joining the club in the spring.
Founded in 2012, Lidköpings FK competes in the Elitettan, the second-highest division of Swedish women's soccer.
