No. 7 Memphis Falls to No. 2 TCU in NCAA Second Round

FORT WORTH, Texas – Memphis women's soccer's season came to an end on Friday night in the NCAA Second Round at the hands of No. 2 seed TCU, 4-0.

The seventh-seeded Tigers finish with a 17-1-3 record as the final undefeated team in the nation falls. TCU moves to 17-2-2 and will take on North Carolina on Monday in the third round back at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.

"Credit to TCU; the atmosphere was fantastic, and they came out with more intensity. Conceding early was obviously a gut punch and it felt like we never really found our rhythm," said Brooks Monaghan. "I'm proud of the girls and what we were able to achieve this season. When you reflect on the year, you can't just reflect on the final result and we had a great year."

Memphis opened the game on the front foot but were hit with a swift counterattack from TCU, and talisman Seven Castain buried the team's first shot in the third minute to lead take a 1-0 lead. The hosts found their second goal just seven minutes later off a corner kick.

After an entanglement in the penalty area that the referee originally deemed harmless, a video review awarded TCU a penalty, which they converted to make 3-0. Castain would score right before halftime for the fourth and final goal of the game.

Memphis were given a penalty early in the second half when senior Flavie Dubé was brought down in the box, but the referee overturned his original decision after review.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, the shots on goal were just six to three in favor of TCU, and 17-10 on overall shots. Abby Kudla made two saves for the Tigers in net while Olivia Geller made three.

The Tigers conclude the season with 17 wins, tied for the second most in program history (22 in 2011). They won their 16th conference championship, the sixth most for any Division-I program since 2007, when they won their first.
