Woerner named Senior CLASS Award candidate
Sep 20, 2018 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis senior forward Elizabeth Woerner has been named one of 30 women's soccer student-athletes selected as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
In the classroom, Woerner has excelled since her freshman season at Memphis. Woerner has been a member of the Tiger 3.0 Club and named to the Dean's List in all previous six semesters of her collegiate career. The Bloomington, Ill., native was also listed to the All-American Athletic Conference Academic Team in 2016 and 2017.
Woerner is a senior participant in the University of Memphis' most selective and competitive leadership scholarship program, Emerging Leaders. Throughout this four-year program, she has not only given back hundreds of hours of service to her community, but she has also engaged in leadership coursework and projects that will ultimately serve to benefit the world around her. Whether teaching leadership classes to a group of kindergarteners at an inner-city school in Memphis, or using her own leadership skills to mentor younger students on our campus, Woerner has taken the opportunity to use her platform in sport to create positive change for those around her.
The senior has also been involved in the greater Memphis community on a regular basis, serving at several non-profits in the Memphis area since her collegiate career started. She regularly serves at Target House, engaging with children and families who are long term patients at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She also spends time serving at the FedEx Family House, who serve children and families that receive care at LeBonheur Children's Hospital. In addition, Woerner has served the community through Read Across America, Shelby Farms, Ronald McDonald House, and this year, is running the St. Jude Half Marathon while fundraising to support the mission and cause of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In the spring of 2017, Woerner and the Tigers ranked No. 2 nationally among all NCAA Division I institutions in community service, as announced by NCAA Team Works.
Woerner has been on the Memphis Student Athlete Advisory Committee since her freshman year. She has been a member of the Executive Team of the Committee since her sophomore year, and this year was voted by her peers as President. Woerner was also selected to serve as Coordinator of Student-Athlete Engagement on the 2018-19 American Athletic Conference SAAC Executive Board.
A four-year starter for the Tigers, Woerner has been a staple in the Memphis offensive attack since her freshman campaign. In her first three seasons, Woerner registered 20 goals and eight assists and has also been a standout among the league. She was named to the 2018 All-American Athletic Conference Preseason Team after earning First Team All-AAC honors in 2017. Woerner was a two-time AAC Weekly Honor Roll recipient in 2017 (Aug. 21 and Oct. 9), and was also named the league's Player of the Week on Oct. 24, 2016.
