MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Time to Shine Capital Campaign is shedding light, literally, on the University of Memphis soccer programs.
The UofM announced a $500,000 project Friday to light the Billy J. Murphy Track and Soccer complex. The Time to Shine campaign started in 2013 and will conclude with the return of Memphis men's and women's soccer matches to the UofM Park Avenue Campus.
"Our student-athletes and coaching staff are so deserving of this addition to our facilities," UofM President Dr. M. David Rudd said. "It is time to bring our teams back home to the UofM campus."
Women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan, beginning his 19th season at Memphis, thanked Rudd and Tigers' Athletic Director Tom Bowen for their efforts in "making this happen."
"Today is a big day for Memphis soccer," Monaghan said. "Adding lights to our field brings us one step closer to our home – back on campus where we belong."
Men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney said he "couldn't be more excited about the future of Tiger soccer with the announcement of this news."
"To hear this shows we are headed in the right direction for a stadium that our student-athletes can be proud of and that represents this great University well," Mulrooney said.
A new soccer pitch on the infield of the track was part of a renovation of the Murphy Track & Field Complex which began in 2013. The soccer teams began playing and practicing on the infield pitch in 2017. The addition of lights will allow both soccer teams to schedule evening home matches. With an adjacent practice field, the soccer teams will be closer to their vision of creating a full home-pitch feel.
"This really is an epic moment to put a capstone on a project that began with a gift from the Hardin Foundation," Bowen said. "One of the goals of that project was to bring Memphis soccer back home. Thank you to Dr. Rudd for bringing our men's and women's soccer programs home permanently."
